Think of Safyre…

4 Feb

Every day, each person must face a variety of challenges, both internal and external. There is no doubt that the stresses and strains of life can be overwhelming because they cripple and debilitate so many.

Most importantly, whatever challenges you face are challenges that are important to you. In other words, we are not in a contest. It doesn’t matter if someone else has “more problems” than you.

A wise man once said, “If you think you have problems, let us all write them down on a piece of paper and put them in this hat. Now, we will all pick someone else’s problems. I bet, when you read your new problems, you will want your old one back.”

The story you are about to discover is about a little girl whose daily challenges would completely overwhelm even the strongest of us.

Her name is Safyre, and she is eight years old. She is the only survivor of an arson attack that killed her entire family, left her homeless, and burned most of her body.

The arson attack happened in 2013. Firefighters found Safyre holding onto her father’s chest. He died saving his daughter, but he could not protect her from the flames.

Most of her body suffered burns. She has undergone over 50 surgeries including amputation of a hand and foot. She is now being raised by her father’s sister.

Liz Dolder, her aunt says, “Safyre is a typical 8-year-old – she’s just wrapped in a different package… She is the bravest, most courageous little girl you will ever meet. She is funny and witty, sweet and caring, and super strong… She is truly amazing. Once you meet her, she is unforgettable.

“Safyre lost everything her father, her mother, her sister, her brothers, her home, her favorite toy, her favorite outfit – everything that was familiar to her…She even lost the one thing we all take for granted – her reflection. But she wakes every morning with a smile on her face. She is the true definition of hope, faith, and love.”

A story was written about Safyre right before Christmas asking the community for help. It said all she wanted for Christmas was Christmas cards. The last line of the story was: “If you’ve got a stamp to spare, and feel like spreading a little joy, you can mail the cards to: Safyre / P.O. Box 6126 / Schenectady, NY 12306 / USA”

The response was incredible. Cards flooded in from all over the world. Newscasts, newspapers, and websites showed pictures of Safyre holding tons of cards… smiling.

But the big question is: NOW WHAT?

What happens now that Christmas has passed? It is great that so many people came together to make her holiday special, but wouldn’t it be nice if all that love continued?

Wouldn’t it be nice if you could take a little time out from your life and send Safyre a postcard from your vacation? Or send her a card or letter just to say hi and to let her know you read about her story and were thinking about her? It would only take a few minutes and the price of a stamp…

Man Saves 400 Pound Bear from Drowning and 14-Year-Old Saves 20,000 Pets’ Lives!

7 Jan

When you think of a hero, what type of person do you think about? If you are like most, you picture someone with a gift who can do things most people cannot. They are special… NOT like you, right?

Well, what if that type of thinking and definition was DEAD WRONG? In other words, what if most heroes were average people JUST LIKE YOU? What if you have everything it takes to be a hero, but you just don’t know it?

You do. These two stories will prove it.

Several years ago, a nearly 400 lbs. (~181 kg) black bear somehow ended up in a residential neighborhood in Alligator Point, Florida.

Wildlife officers rushed to the scene, and their plan was to shoot the bear with a tranquilizer and relocate him. Good plan — but like many plans, it didn’t go so smoothly.

After the bear was shot with the tranquilizer, he ran into the nearby ocean in an attempt to escape. As he swam into the water, the tranquilizer started to make him drowsy. He started to slow and would inevitably fall asleep and drown.

That’s when Adam Warwick, a biologist with the Wildlife Commission, sprung into action. He leaped into the water and swam in front of the massive bear. He said it was a spur of the moment decision, and he had a lot of adrenaline pumping when he saw the bear in the water.

Warwick grabbed the huge bear by the scruff of the neck and started to pull him to shore. The bear actually tried to climb on top of Warwick, but he was too weakened by the tranquilizer to do so. Warwick suffered minor cuts and scrapes from the bear’s claws but he was able to get him to shore and save his life. The bear was later transported to Osceola National Forest.

I know what you are thinking — you could never jump in the ocean and pull such a heavy animal to shore. I bet Warwick thought that too. Well, here is a story that ANYONE can do. How do I know? Because it was done by a fourteen-year-old….

Lou Wegner used to believe that shelters were safe places for animals to live until they found a home. That opinion changed after he volunteered at one and found out countless dogs and cats are put to sleep every day.

“It was heartbreaking. All these dogs crying in their cages. Knowing they would be put down broke my heart,” he said. So Lou did something about it. He and some of his friends started Kids Against Animal Cruelty when he was only fourteen years old. Two years later, their Facebook page has over 15,000 likes and has become the fastest growing animal rescue in the country. Besides finding homes for as many animals as possible, his goal is to get more people to adopt from shelters, to spay and neuter their pets, and to educate them about pet responsibility.

Since Wegner started Kids Against Animal Cruelty, other teens have set up chapters of the group around the country. Wegner hopes to eventually have a chapter in every state in order to make a bigger difference.

Woman with Incurable Disease Blinks Over 1 Million Times to Write Her Book!

7 Dec

It’s everywhere you look.  “Life is hard.”  “Life is a grind.”  “Life is a struggle.”  “Mondays are brutal.”  “I barely made it through the day.”  And on… and on… and on.

Here’s something you need to know:  No, it’s not.  Life is not a never-ending, difficult struggle unless you think of it that way.  On the contrary, life can be a never-ending source of happiness and fulfillment — if you make the choice to see it through a different lens.

Here’s a great example…

According to an article published by Central European News Agency (CEN), Mrs. Gong Xunhui, of Chengdu, China, was diagnosed with ALS in 2003 and has needed the aid of a wheelchair since 2006.  With the help of her husband, Xunhui completed her 150,000-word book by blinking more than one million times to spell out phonetic sounds to form Chinese characters.

She writes, “I want to use my personal experience to tell other ALS patients that, although we suffer from this incurable disease, there is still much we can do to enrich our lives.”

Much of Xunhui’s book is about her struggles as a child dealing with her debilitating disease.  She published 5,000 copies of the book, and the Chinese government published another 1,800.  Xunhui’s goal is to make enough to buy six breathing machines to help other ALS sufferers.

It’s amazing how many people break down at the thought of another Monday while Xunhui was blinking her way to finishing her book and becoming a published author.

But she is not the only ALS success story.  Last month, we briefly discussed the story of Stephen Hawking. He is thought by many to be the best mind in physics who has ever lived, and all of Hawking’s most famous work came after he was diagnosed with ALS and confined to a wheelchair without the ability to speak.

In fact, when doctors diagnosed Hawking with ALS, he was just 21 and had started work on his PhD in physics. Even though he was given just two years to live, he didn’t call it a life and roll over and quit. Instead, when his doctor told him his disease would take away muscle control, he asked, “What about my brain?”

The doctor told him his brain would be fine but he would not have any way to communicate what he was thinking.

Hawking began working feverishly to get as much work done on his theories as possible.  He completed his PhD and wrote several books — A Brief History of Time being his most popular.

Hawking is now 73 years old and has been typing with the movement of a cheek muscle for quite some time.  (It looks like he beat the prognosis of two years.)

He once wrote the perfect advice for anyone who thinks they have it tough and thinks they are struggling… “However bad life may seem, there is always something you can do, and succeed at.  While there’s life, there is hope.”

How a Story Can Dramatically Change Your Life

5 Nov

A man who has helped many people recently died.  His name was Wayne Dyer.    If you don’t know who Wayne was, you might want to do a quick YouTube search after you read this.  Wayne was a self-help author and motivational speaker.  His first book, Your Erroneous Zones (1976), is one of the best-selling books of all time with an estimated 35 million copies sold to date.  He started out as a high school guidance counselor and later had a private therapy practice.

Many people loved Wayne’s content and message but others did not.  Just like anything else, beauty is in the eye of the beholder.  In fact, Wayne was sued for plagiarism in 2010.  That’s why the first sentence said, “A person who has helped many people recently died,” not “A perfect person who has helped many people…”

One thing is for sure, Wayne was an incredible speaker whose message helped countless people.

A great example is a story Wayne told many times.  This story is very emotional, and Wayne once said he had a hard time not tearing up every time he told it.  There are several videos on YouTube of Wayne telling this particular story.  One of the most impressive things are all the comments underneath those videos saying how hearing Wayne tell this story made them cry and/or changed their life.

It was The Shaya Story… and here is the shortened version…

Shaya was a student at a school for disabled children. Shaya’s father was very upset and questioned many things about life after seeing his son not be able to do the common things other children could.

One day, Shaya and his father walked past a park where some boys Shaya knew were playing baseball.  Shaya’s father asked the boys if his son could play with them.  One boy said his team was losing by six runs and it was already the eighth inning.  He said he would take Shaya on his team and try to let him bat in the 9th.  Shaya’s team scored several runs, and in the 9th inning, the bases were loaded with the winning run on base.  Surprisingly, they gave Shaya a bat. He did not even know how to hold it.

He stepped up to the plate and the pitcher lobbed one in, obviously trying to be nice.  It did not help, Shaya missed badly.  One of Shaya’s teammates ran in and stepped up to the plate with Shaya.  Here is how the story ended:

“The pitcher again took a few steps forward to toss the ball softly toward Shaya.  As the pitch came in, Shaya and his teammate swung the bat and together they hit a slow ground ball to the pitcher.  The pitcher picked up the soft grounder and could easily have thrown the ball to the first baseman.  Shaya would have been out and that would have ended the game.  Instead, the pitcher took the ball and threw it on a high arc to right field, far beyond reach of the first baseman.  Everyone started yelling, ‘Shaya, run to first.  Run to first.’ Never in his life had Shaya run so fast.  He scampered down the baseline wide-eyed and startled.  By the time he reached first base, the right-fielder had the ball.  He could have thrown the ball to the second baseman who could tag Shaya out, who was still running.

“But the right-fielder understood what the pitcher’s intentions were, so he threw the ball high and far over the third baseman’s head.  Everyone yelled, ‘Run to second.  Run to second.’  Shaya ran towards second base as the runners ahead of him deliriously circled the bases towards home.  As Shaya reached second base, the opposing shortstop ran to him, turned him in the direction of third base and shouted, ‘Run to third.’  As Shaya rounded third, the boys from both teams ran behind him screaming, ‘Shaya run home.’  Shaya ran home, stepped on home plate and all 18 boys lifted him on their shoulders and made him the hero, as he had just hit a ‘grand slam’ and won the game for his team.”

Wayne said this story was true.  If it is true or not, it does not really matter.  What matters is the effect the message has on people – maybe even you.

The Rude Comment that Led to a Life-Changing Event!

13 Oct

The world has changed.  Things aren’t what they used to be.  No one respects or gives a darn about anyone besides themselves.  These words are commonly spoken today, especially by those missing and reminiscing about the “good ol’ days.”

In the opinion of many, society has basically gone down the drain.

There are many reasons for having this attitude.  One does not have to watch more than five minutes of the nightly news to feel this way.  Clearly, the dark part of society… and all its horrific acts… sells more on TV than feel-good news.

But there are exceptions to all this that tell a different story.  These exceptions might be more common than you think.

The story you are about to read is one such exception that might have you praising the good “current” days.  Here’s the story…

Leonard Bullock was a forklift driver.  He always put in an honest day’s work.  He never got rich, but that was never his goal.  He just wanted a happy life.      Bullock retired in 1995 and married Dorothy in 2000.  The two had met at a church in Walla Walla, Washington.

Bullock has a small monthly retirement that just pays the bills and does not allow him and his wife to do any work on their house.  Over the years, the lack of repairs finally caught up with them.

That’s when Josh Cyganik heard a brutal comment.

You see, Bullock had been sitting on his porch every day for years, and Josh had been waving to him every day for quite a while.  One day, Josh heard two passing teenagers passing say the house was is such bad shape that it should be burned down.

Josh said the look on Bullock’s face was terrible.  He could see the pain the older man felt and didn’t think the elderly should ever be talked to that way and feel that embarrassment.

So instead of just ignoring it, Josh took action.  A couple days later, Josh told some of his friends (one owned a lumber store) the story and asked them for help.  The owner of the lumber store donated paint and several friends said they would help.

But here’s where it gets really good… Josh posted on Facebook asking for help.  His plea instantly went viral and was shared over 6,000 times.  He said that even though his Facebook is private, “the post blew up like wildfire.”

When Josh told Bullock what was going on and asked if they could paint his house, Bullock was ecstatic.  Neither of them expected what would happen that day…

Josh arrived at 8:00 am, and 20 volunteers had already shown up.  Throughout the day, more and more kept coming to help.  It was estimated more than 100 complete strangers showed up to help paint Leonard Bullock’s house.  “It was just a good vibe!  Everybody was happy and excited,” Josh said.  “We received a lot of additional donations from people who didn’t come but wanted to help.  People were dropping off food and drinks all day long. Starbucks even donated six gallons of water and iced tea.”

Now, Bullock’s home looks awesome and he and his wife sit on the porch and smile every day.  Maybe the good ol’ days are still here…

Bringing Happiness One High-Five at a Time!

10 Sep

Life is tough. Every day is a grind. It is almost impossible to “get ahead.”

If you believe those three things, it is very easy to become overwhelmed, quit trying, and settle for a miserable life that is barely worth living.

Thankfully, those three statements could not be further from the truth, especially when you understand what will be revealed in the next few paragraphs.

But first, you must be introduced to the work of a revolutionary person who passed away in 2009. His name was Jim Rohn, and he was known for many things. One was his “rags to riches” story that is way too long to tell here. The short version is: Jim grew up working on a family-owned farm in Idaho. He started his professional life by working as a stock clerk for the department store Sears. In 1955, Rohn went to a lecture on direct selling, and he jumped in with both feet. To make a long story short, he became tremendously successful in several businesses, which led him to teach personal development seminars all over the world.

Many of today’s huge success stories were people Rohn mentored including Tony Robbins (way back in the 70s before anyone knew his name), Mark Victor Hanson, and Jack Canfield (Chicken Soup for the Soul).

One of Rohn’s books, Five Major Pieces to the Life Puzzle, published in 1991, describes what he considered the five components of success: Philosophy – how you think; Attitude – how you feel; Action – what you do; Results – measure often to see if you are making progress; and Lifestyle – the kind of life you make for yourself out of the four pieces.

This quote from Rohn’s book is particularly profound: “It seems that every life form on this planet strives toward its maximum potential … except human beings. A tree does not grow to half its potential size and then say, ‘I guess that will do.’ A tree will drive its roots as deep as possible. It will soak up as much nourishment as it can, stretch as high and as wide as nature will allow, and then look down as if to remind us of how much each of us could become if we would only do all that we can.”

Clearly, we all need something from time to time to remind us how much we COULD become if we would do ALL we can and not just put in the minimal effort.

What does all this have to do with bringing happiness one high-five at a time?

Here is what… Rohn also said, “Effective communication is 20% what you know and 80% how you feel about what you know.” Clearly Rohn believed and taught that attitude, and how you view things has a major impact of your level of success and how happy you are in life.

A great example of this is a video on YouTube that went viral with over two-million views. In the video, filmmaker Meir Kalmanson ran around Park Avenue in New York City giving a friendly gesture to unsuspecting people trying to hail a cab: a high-five.

The 24-year-old told the New York Daily News he was walking around Manhattan one day when he saw a person with his hand in the air. He told a friend he would try to give the man a high-five and pulled it off. He later decided to try to create a video about the concept.

His high-fives seemed to instantly change the attitudes of the people he gave them to. While most people see hailing a cab in the crowded streets of New York as a miserable chore, he was able to instantly turn it into a pleasurable experience.

How many “miserable” things in your life can instantly be turned into a pleasurable experience by simply changing your attitude about them? How much success and happiness might that bring you? The only way to know for sure is to do it.
