The Incredible Story of a Teenager Who Biked Six Hours in the Hot Summer Sun and Slept in a Tent Just to Start College!

31 Aug

In this day and age, when there seems to be more bad news than good, it’s not uncommon for older adults to say things like, “You know… I’m glad I had my kids when I did and they are all in their 20s now.  Because there is no way I would ever have children today.  Our society and the world has gone crazy.  It’s way too violent, and I’m really scared about what’s going on and what’s going to happen.”

Ironically, their parents would have probably said the same thing a generation ago. And their parents’ parents would have said something similar. So on and so on…

The good news is that if you honestly want to see the good in the world, then you don’t have to scroll very far down your Facebook newsfeed to encounter an inspirational story like that of Fred Barley.

For those who didn’t see the new stories about Fred Barley, he’s a 19-year-old college student who found himself without a home in the weeks before starting his next semester in college. Fred took a chance, packed all his belongings into two duffel bags, and rode a small bike six hours in the Georgia sun to try and get to campus before his fellow students in order to secure a job while he attended classes.

Since the dorms hadn’t yet opened, he slept in a tent at night on the campus grounds, thinking it would be a safe location to stay. It wasn’t long before two police officers happened upon Fred…

Once they had a chance to talk with him and hear his story, the officers decided to help Fred out by getting him a hotel room so he didn’t have to sleep in a tent. Soon enough, the story hit the local news and went viral.

A local woman befriended Fred and took him shopping to get new clothes. A stranger sent him a new mountain bike so he wouldn’t need to ride his small bike any longer. Debbie Adamson, the owner of a local Pizzeria even offered him a job. She told the local news, “I created a position for him before he walked in the door… I didn’t know his name. I didn’t know the color of his skin. I didn’t care. I’ve been there so I guess I have a soft spot for anyone that is that determined to succeed in life.”

Finally, a GoFundMe was set up for Fred and within three weeks, people had given him over $184,000.00 to help him cover his educational and living expenses—which he’ll need considering he wants to go to Medical School after earning his bachelor’s degree.

But perhaps the best thing Fred got out of this whole ordeal was the friends he made. He said, “Some of the gifts aren’t as important as the friends I’ve made… More important than everything – the clothes, the shoes – the relationships mean so much more to me.”

Watching this amazing young man struck an emotional chord deep inside many of the people who commented on and shared his story via social media.

While most people constantly complain about everything in the world, this kid saw the positive.  He took massive action, and against all odds, is making a better life for himself.

Maybe we should all try to be a lot more like Fred.  He is an amazing kid by all appearances, and it wouldn’t be difficult to imagine someone with his drive doing big things in the future. We can’t wait to hear more about his success.

There Are Miracles Performed Every Day!

4 Aug

There is no doubt that we live in a very turbulent time.  If you open the newspaper, go online, or turn on the television, the news typically only shows the darkest side of society.  You’ve heard the term, “If it bleeds, it leads.” News editors know that ratings (and their profits) go up the more they focus on violence, mass shootings, racism, and hatred.

But while a lot of bad stuff happens in the word, there is also much, much, much more good occurring at the same time.  Here is a perfect example…

On April 28th, 2016 an incredible act of heroism took place and you probably didn’t see it on the news.  It was posted on Facebook and was shared tens of thousands of times at the time this article went to press.

Nicole Morgan was out with a friend and her six-year-old son, Mickey, buying sunglasses when she put her bag on her shoulder and felt a sensation like she had been burnt with a hot poker.  She had just been stung by a bee.

It was not a big deal.  She had been stung before.  She was not allergic as far as she knew, and she scraped off the stinger that was still in her shoulder.

They stopped in another store, and that’s when things started going bad…

She was disoriented, having trouble breathing, and could not move. She thought she was going to die. Panic had set it, and it was the panic on her son’s face that may have saved her life. Here are her exact words as posted on Facebook about what happened next…

“That was of course until another man came running towards me and knelt down next to me and asked what had happened and if he could help. I told him that I had been stung by a bee and that I needed to get to the hospital and then I became unconscious (this took all of about 4 minutes from the start of the anaphylactic shock in Pick n Pay to the point where I became unconscious in the walk way at Cedar Square). This man was Obakeng Seutane. He dispersed the crowd that had gathered around me and put my hands behind my head to help open up my constricted wind pipe and then calmed my son down. He then told Mikey that he was going to take me to the hospital and got me up with the help of another man and carried/dragged me down the passage towards his car. He put me in the backseat and strapped me in (God only knows how, as I was still unconscious throughout). He put my son into the front seat, introduced himself and explained to Mikey that he was going to have to drive very fast to get his mom to the hospital (Life Hospital). Once there, I was put into a wheel chair and taken to emergency where I was administered adrenaline shot, after adrenaline shot, after adrenaline shot into my chest and various different antihistamines.”

After a lot of treatment, things got better. She wrote,  “Although I had ‘regained consciousness’, I am unable to recall anything at all from the time I fell unconscious at Cedar Square until I woke up in ICU at 19:30 that night and remember thinking to myself, Wowee, I am actually here! I am alive!!! All thanks to my son, whose terrified face caught Obakeng’s eye as he was walking past on his way to gym with his earphones on and decided that we needed his help!”

Nowadays, people tend to walk around while looking down at their smart phone and when they notice someone who needs help, they move along thinking someone else will step up. Perhaps this story will inspire more people to pay attention to their surroundings and offer aid when it’s needed.

Man Sentenced to Death Is Recognized as a Hero 40 Years Later…

12 Jul

You’ve probably heard the old adage that truth is often stranger than fiction.  This is actually only part of the actual quote that is rarely used in its full length and seldom attributed to its originator. It goes…

“Truth is stranger than fiction, but it is because Fiction is obliged to stick to possibilities; Truth isn’t.”

Who originally said that?  None other than Mark Twain.  If you like interesting and insightful quotes, Twain in a person you should look up.  He was very insightful and not afraid to speak his mind.

Now back to the story… but you may want to keep that quote in mind as you read on…

It was some time in the early 1940s.  The place was Poland.

Hitler and the Nazis had a plan to exterminate certain races of people and conquer the world.  But not everyone knew it… yet.

Many countries were ignorant to Hitler’s plans or they simply chose to turn a blind eye.  “But he is doing it over there – not here,” was a common excuse to ignore Germany’s actions.  That attitude proved costly to many…

Witold Pilecki joined the Polish resistance soon after the Nazis invaded Poland.  When mysterious camps started popping up all over the country, he suspected the they had a nefarious purpose and he set out on a mission to discover what was really going on.

So he did something completely unimaginable… He deliberately got himself arrested by the Nazis so that he could infiltrate one of the camps: Auschwitz.

He spent 2.5 long years suffering at Auschwitz in order to send information to the world that the Nazis were actually running death camps, and this intelligence was used to try to convince Germany’s enemies to send help.

How did he send this information back to compatriots?  He built a radio in the death camp using various  parts that had been smuggled in.

When help didn’t arrive, Pilecki escaped and set out to contact the London-based Polish government-in-exile in an effort to try to get help for all the suffering people in Auschwitz and the other concentration camps. But the Allies did not believe his dispatches could be true.  They thought his claims were exaggerated or false because they could not believe that so many had been killed in the death camps during the preceding years.

When Poland later fell under the control of Communists, he was sentenced to death on charges of espionage and the illegal crossing of the borders under a false name. After the fall of communism towards the end of the 20th century, Pilecki’s true contributions to the war effort were finally recognized by his countrymen, all charges against him were posthumously dropped, and he was decorated with the highest honors the Polish military could offer.

So there you have it.  A man who sacrificed his own life by willingly entering a Nazi death camp to try to save Poland (and the world) wasn’t recognized as the hero he was until over 40 years after his death.

The truth certainly can be stranger than fiction, but it is because “fiction is obliged to stick to possibilities; Truth isn’t.”

Thai Man Feeds 80 Stray Dogs Every Day!

13 Jun

(Names And Details May Have Been Changed To Protect Privacy)

What is a hero?

To many, a hero is the baseball player who hits a game-winning home run or someone who takes a public stand for a just cause, regardless of the impact it has on their career or livelihood.

But, there are many heroes you’ve probably never heard of because they do not seek notoriety—they simply help others because it’s just the right thing to do.

Michael Baines is one of these heroes.

Here is his story…

Michael owns a restaurant in Thailand, and he got used to seeing the countless abandoned and stray dogs that lived on the streets. For a while, Michael, like most people, just ignored them.

Then about five years ago, everything changed.

That’s when a pregnant stray dog made her way to the back of his restaurant. Michael knew he had to do something, so he began taking care of her. He connected with the animal and from that moment on, decided he was going to make a difference in the lives of the stray and abandoned dogs in his town.

He could no longer just walk by a suffering dog anymore without doing something to help so he started feeding the strays he came across and soon enough, he was feeding 80 per day. Yes, that’s 80 dogs every day.
Michael makes a mixture of dry dog food, white rice, steamed fish, and oil and makes numerous stops around town to feed the dogs he finds. As you can imagine, this is not only time-consuming, but it’s also costly.

It costs about $1,000 USD per month to feed this many dogs. Michael does get some help in the form of donations from some of the locals, but he also pays part of the bill out of his own pocket.

Baines has many supporters, and oddly enough, he also has some who are opposed to what he is doing as if helping the starving dogs in the streets is only exacerbating the problem of stray dogs in the area.
He is quite candid about why this problem exists in the first place. He says it’s not the dog’s fault one bit but it is some of the people in his own community who are 100% responsible.

All these poor dogs are out there suffering because they were once pets that for whatever reason, lost their home. Maybe they got out and their owners never found them (or looked). Or maybe they were abused and ran off. Or maybe they were discarded for no longer being a cute puppy.
Sure, everyone has a great excuse, but in reality, there are no excuses. These are living things that deserve better.

Worse, many of these abandoned dogs were not spayed or neutered. So now they breed in the streets, creating more dogs without a home.
Michael notes, “It is a nice ‘job’ but sometimes very emotional and frustrating, as you see many dogs that is in very bad shape. I do this from my heart and the payment is to meet these lovely dogs and feel their love. That is priceless and worthwhile.”

While some may brush off Michael’s effort as futile given the number of stray dogs roaming the streets in his town alone, he says, “Even if I cannot save them all, I think: for just that single dog I helped—I did [make] a change.”

Every Time You Turn the Lights on in Your House, You Should Think of This Man…

7 Apr

Winston Churchill is credited for saying, “History is written by the victors.” In 1944, George Orwell wrote an essay entitled, “History is Written by the Winners.” As you can imagine, the losers of wars don’t usually get a say or have their side heard. All that is pretty obvious. Well, here is something a little less obvious…

The history we read is also affected by “winners” of less dramatic things than wars. People who are powerful also get to write history and often give themselves and their friends credit they may not deserve. For example, if you were to ask just about anyone who invented the light bulb, the overwhelming majority would say Thomas Edison. Why? Because that’s what everyone learned in school. It’s written in the textbooks, so it must be true.

The fact of the matter is, there were a few other inventors who invented versions of the light bulb before Edison that were not as practical or cost-effective. (In fact, both British and American courts eventually ruled Edison’s patent invalid.)

Here is something even more interesting… Edison fought for many years with another brilliant inventor named Nikola Tesla. One of their biggest disagreements was over direct current (DC) vs. alternating current (AC) as a means of delivering electricity to the masses. Edison was a proponent of DC and said Tesla’s AC was very dangerous, even deadly. Edison spent a lot of time and money trying to discredit Tesla. He would even kill small animals at fairs (and once a full-grown elephant) with AC to show how deadly it was. Tesla responded by demonstrating that AC was perfectly safe by famously shooting current through his own body to power a light bulb in his hand.

Who won the battle? While both AC and DC are utilized in the modern world, the form of electricity that powers the devices in your home is alternating current.

Tesla also had a hand in several other inventions still used in today’s world. For example, he developed and used fluorescent bulbs in his lab some 40 years before they’d become a common sight on city streets. At the 1893 World’s Fair, Tesla took glass tubes and bent them into famous scientists’ names, creating the first neon signs.

In a 2008 article published in the Journal RSNA Radiographics, Dr. Maja Hrabak and her colleagues wrote, “Every radiologist is aware of Nikola Tesla’s research in the field of electromagnetism. The International System (SI) unit of magnetic flux density, the Teslacon magnetic resonance imager, and Teslascan manganese contrast agent were all named after him. Without his other inventions like the alternating current supply, Tesla-Knott generator, and fluorescent lights in view boxes, it is impossible to even imagine a workday in a contemporary radiology department. But if the discovery of x-rays is mentioned, only a few radiologists associate it with Tesla’s name.”

While Guglielmo Marconi was initially credited with the invention of radio, and most believe him to be radio’s inventor to this day, the United States Supreme Court overturned Marconi’s patent in 1943 on the grounds Tesla had invented it years before Marconi.

A few other modern luxuries Tesla helped invent include remote control, electric motor, robotics, laser, and wireless communications. One of Tesla’s biggest goals was to provide unlimited and FREE electrical power for the entire planet. While Tesla’s name has picked up in notoriety in recent years, the reason he isn’t even more popular is that he didn’t do it for the money or the fame. He did it as a gift to the people. He was a true altruist.

In his own words, “Money does not represent such a value as men have placed upon it. All my money has been invested into experiments with which I have made new discoveries enabling mankind to have a little easier life.”

Two Acts of Kindness That Will Change the Way You Feel About Humanity…

7 Mar

You have probably heard this old saying, “I would give you the shirt off my back.” It simply means you are a very kind and generous person who would give everything to another person. The saying is very common, but have you ever seen it done?

Putulik Qumaq is homeless. Originally from Northern Canada, Putulik has been living on the streets of Montreal for 17 years. He knows hunger, pain, and cold. So, when he saw a teenager in a t-shirt laying on the sidewalk in the freezing weather, he did something no one else would. Qumaq walked up to the boy and gave him the coat off his back. Qumaq simply told the teen, “It’s very cold” and handed him his jacket.

But this story has a twist… You see, the 14-year old boy was not homeless after all. Instead, he was shooting a video and only acting homeless just to see if anyone would help him. He said some people gave a little bit of money, but most just ignored him. It’s amazing that the one person who gave the most had the least to offer.

Qumaq said he had a feeling when he saw the boy. He said, “He’s young and I’ve been through that.”

Apparently helping people isn’t new for Qumaq. He frequents a Montreal shelter (The Open Door) and is known for his generosity. A volunteer at the shelter, Frank Paris said, “I see them helping individuals all the time. Here, showing love, brotherly love amongst each other.”

David Chapman, the Assistant Director at The Open Door, said those who have been through hardship are often the most generous. He said, “Often, those who live on the street are people with really big hearts, and this is an aspect that’s often not seen… We see a lot of it because we get to know them. We learn to know their names, we learn a little bit about their stories, and in fact, they are some of the most lovely people you’ll ever meet.”

Now, for another amazing example…

At times, New York City (and other major cities) can be a rough place. Riders on the subway tend to mind their own business and rarely may eye contact with one another. But 23-year-old Joey Resto from Brooklyn is different…

Recently, a fellow rider recorded Joey performing a rare act of altruism that has the Internet buzzing. Joey saw an elderly man shirtless and so cold he was shivering. Joey went over, took his shirt off, and gave it to the man. Lazaro Nolasco, the man who recorded the clip, shared it on Facebook and it had been viewed over nine million times as of this writing.

Resto said that after seeing the man on the train and noticing he had abrasions on his head, he realized he couldn’t sit back and do nothing. He told the New York Daily News, “It was a natural reaction to help, to do what I can. I hope they find this guy. It is not hard to spot him. It just came from the heart. I don’t know how anyone could have walked past him and had extra clothing and not given it to him. He was warm for the first time in I don’t know how long. He just curled up in a corner and went to sleep.”

But Resto didn’t stop there. After putting his shirt on the man, he went and got him a black winter hat and put it on his head. He said he wanted to take the man for a hot meal, but he had fallen asleep and was resting so peacefully that Resto did not want to disturb him.
