The Matt W. Story

How The Courage Of A Young Man With Cerebral Palsy Inspired An Entire School.  Do YOU Have These Kinds Of Guts?

Who knows what his real, full name is.  “Matt W.” was all that was given and that’s all that is needed, because Matt W.’s actions speak louder than words ever could.

Here is why:  Matt W. is a student at Worthington Colonial Hills Elementary School in Ohio.  But Matt W. is not your average student.  You see, Matt suffers from cerebral palsy.

Cerebral palsy is a serious condition and according to the Mayo Clinic, “Cerebral palsy is a disorder of movement, muscle tone or posture that is caused by injury or abnormal development in the immature brain, most often before birth.  Signs and symptoms appear during infancy or preschool years.  In general, cerebral palsy causes impaired movement associated with exaggerated reflexes or rigidity of the limbs and trunk, abnormal posture, involuntary movements, unsteadiness of walking, or some combination of these.  The effect of cerebral palsy on functional abilities varies greatly.  People with cerebral palsy often have other conditions related to developmental brain abnormalities, such as intellectual disabilities, vision and hearing problems, or seizures.”

That’s why it was a very big deal when Matt decided he was going to run the 400 meters (approximately ¼ mile) at his school’s once a year track event.  What happened during that race is one of the most inspirational events you’ll ever see. There’s a link to a video of it below, but we’ll describe it here…

At the start of the race, all the 5th and 6th graders took off.  Matt slowly made his way off the starting line.  His running strides were labored but what he lacked in grace he made up for in determination… tenfold.  The video’s soundtrack is the theme for Rocky.

The race was two complete laps around the 200 meter track and the other students quickly lapped him.  Then, the real magic started.  Matt’s gym teacher, John Blaine, started running the race with Matt while providing him verbal and emotional support.

As Matt completed the first lap, supporters started to cheer more.  About a quarter of the way around his second lap, a little girl made her way over to Matt while yelling to cheer him on.  Inspired by Matt (and taking the little girl’s lead) more students rushed over to join Matt.

Students completely surrounded him with everyone chanting over and over, “Let’s go Matt… Let’s go!!!” Matt picked up his pace as his classmates and friends energized him.

More and more students appeared.  They all crossed the finished line together with a massive cheer in just under four minutes.  The students swarmed Matt with high fives and hugs.  Matt was obviously exhausted but enjoyed this amazing moment with his supporters.

Matt’s mother broke down in tears several times as she witnessed her son’s incredible journey and life lesson for us all.

Many doctors believe in the power of positive thought.  Not only does it have the power to possibly heal us, but it can also move mountains when it has to.

Matt W. may never win an Olympic Gold medal, but his actions during this 400 meter race may change more lives than any Gold Medal winner probably ever has.

There is no doubt many of his classmates will achieve great successes in life because of Matt W.’s remarkable inspiration. Here’s the video of Matt W.’s amazing race: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o6Alt2DssYc

Former Professional Wrestler Helps Disabled Gulf War Veteran Lose 140 lbs. And Walk Again!

20 Feb

Inspirational Story Of The Month (Names And Details Have Been Changed To Protect Privacy)

Arthur Boorman was a paratrooper in the Gulf War.  All the jumps took their toll on his back and knees.  Unable to easily move from the pain, he gained weight, ballooning up the 297 pounds. He was no longer able to walk without the assistance of two crutches.

Doctors told Arthur he would never walk unassisted again, and he believed them… for 15 long years. He was 47 years old and had given up hope.

He thought exercise was impossible. He wanted to try Yoga, but instructors wouldn’t give him a shot; that is, until he found an unlikely angel.  As the story goes, one day Arthur stumbled across the website of former professional wrestler, Diamond Dallas Page (DDP).  DDP’s yoga seemed different and inspirational to Arthur.  So, he sent DDP an email detailing his situation.  DDP read his story and looked at his pictures.  His immediate reaction was, “God, how am I gonna help that guy?”  But, he was willing to try.  Arthur said, “He didn’t know me… but he believed in me… when no one else did.”

Arthur began trying DDP’s yoga via DVDs in his living room.  He fell.  Over and over again… he fell.  But every time, he kept getting back up.  He kept trying because someone believed in him.  He also started eating the way DDP advised him to. He started losing weight and gaining balance.  He fell less and less.

Then, the most important thing took place… Arthur started to believe it could happen.  He lost 100 pounds in 6 months.  Then, he lost 40 more.  He sent DDP videos documenting every step of his amazing transformation.  But, there was one video that made even this big, bad ex-pro wrestler cry.

In the last video, DDP could see Arthur walking unassisted for the first time in 15 years.  No wheelchair.  No crutches.  Then, all of a sudden… Arthur started running! He picked up speed and sprinted by the camera.  The end of the video says: “They were wrong… it was possible.  Never underestimate what you can accomplish when you believe in yourself.   Almost anything is possible when you believe in yourself.   Never give up.  I lost 140 lbs. in 10 months.  Thanks DDP for believing in me.”

Notice he thanked DDP for believing in him and not the Yoga?  It’s something to think about.  Here’s the video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bIXOo8D9Qsc

Are You A Good Enough Person To Do This?

2 Jan

Here is proof that there are still amazing people in the world.  Are you one of them?

Every day, it feels like all the news covers is the dark, horrible side of humanity.

Sure, people do bad things,  even evil things.  But, there is another side to this story.  There’s a clear argument that can be made that many more people are good than bad.  For every one bad person in the news (or going viral on the internet) there are hundreds, thousands, or millions who did not do anything wrong.  In fact, many, if not most, probably did quite a bit of good.

So, why don’t we hear about all this good?  Quite frankly, it’s because bad stuff sells.  It sells much more than good news.  People love drama.  It’s no coincidence Honey Boo Boo, The Kardashians, and The Jersey Shore were/are monstrously successful shows.

That’s why I bet you have probably heard of those shows but have not heard about this…

Rabbi Noah Muroff lives in New Haven, Connecticut and bought a desk off Craig’s List for $200.  So far, that’s nothing shocking… but it gets better…

When he got the desk home, he couldn’t get it into his office in one piece.  So, Rabbi Noah took the desk apart and pulled out the drawers.

Behind one of the drawers, he found a plastic bag.  At first glance, Muroff saw what he thought to be a $100 bill.

When he opened the bag, he discovered there were quite a few $100 bills.  In fact, there was $98,000 in cash.  That’s ninety-eight THOUSAND dollars in CASH.

WOW!  So let me ask you a question… What is the first thing you would do with that money after you stopped jumping around cheering? Pay off some bills?  Buy a car?  Go on vacation?  Give some to charity?

Muroff did none of that.  Instead, he did the right thing.  He called the person he just bought the desk from and told them what he had found.

As it turned out, the desk’s previous owner had hidden her inheritance money in the desk and had forgotten all about it.

Muroff returned the money.  All of it.  He is quoted as simply saying, “The most important thing in life is to be honest.”

That’s it.  There was no police chase.  No drugs or violence.  No one yelling and screaming.  Just an ethical and moral person choosing to do the right thing and not making a big deal about it or even looking for public approval or praise.

The comments posted on this story were varied.  Some praised him and said they would do the same thing.  Others said he was a fool and they would have spent the money.  Some said it is all just a matter of the amount and that we all have a price.  If that was $10 million… or $1 billion… that he would have kept it.

So, the question for you is, what would YOU do?  Let’s say it was $10 million and no one else knew.  It was your secret.  Do ethics and morality really have a price?

Do YOU have a price?

Is This The Blueprint To Losing 68 Pounds?

31 Dec

Inspirational Story Of The Month (Names And Details May Have Been Changed To Protect Privacy)

Woman claims these two things helped her go from 210 lbs. to 142 lbs.  Will they work for you?

It might be because of what we see on television, the Internet, or magazines but it seems like almost everyone wants to lose weight. Some just want to drop a few unwanted pounds while others need to lose a whole heck of a lot more.  For that reason, weight loss is estimated to be a $60 billion industry.  When there is that much money involved, you know it will attract con artists and scammers who want to sell you the next magic pill, exotic diet, or whiz bang gadget that will make the pounds fall right off your body. Some of their approaches may work, but doesn’t it seem like within a couple years, the same people are pitching the next miracle doo-dad? What happened to the last one?

Believe it or not, there is a proven and effective way to lose all the weight your heart desires. It is 100% free, and this story tells it all.

It’s the story of a young woman named Dawn who is married to Steve, a soldier deployed in Afghanistan.

Dawn gained 55 pounds while pregnant with their first child, though she readily admits that she had started gaining weight long before that.  She was still surprised when her doctor told her she weighed over 200 lbs.

Six weeks after their son was born, Dawn weighed 210 pounds. Then, Steve left for Afghanistan.  On Facebook, Dawn wrote, “At the time, I still weighed 210 pounds. I grew to hate mirrors, and my attempts to squeeze myself into my old clothes left me feeling defeated.  One day, not long after Steve had left, I decided I was done feeling bad about myself.  I wanted a healthy body again, so I had to get to work.

“I started a strict exercise routine and committed to two daily workouts, including a bootcamp class and 45 minutes spent on the treadmill.  I cut out fast food for 11 months without cheating and never skipped a workout.  My husband was in awe of my commitment.  While he’s deployed, we rely on Facebook to communicate, and I sent him updates from home, pictures of our son, and messages about my progress in the gym. I was getting stronger every day, and I loved that he got to cheer me on from overseas.”

When Steve came home just before their son’s first birthday, Dawn weighed 142 lbs. (less than she weighed when they first met)!

So, what is the “blueprint?”  The blueprint is simple:  Commitment and hard work.  Dawn said, “It wasn’t easy.  There is no magic pill for good health…”

Making that acknowledgment and accepting that statement as fact is the first step in losing any amount of weight you want and living a much healthier life.

Yes, losing weight is NOT complicated.  In fact, it is quite simple, but simple doesn’t not mean “magic” or “overnight” or “no work” or “take this pill and wake up skinny while eating ice cream and sitting on the couch.”

All those statements are tactics used by marketers trying to get their share of the $60 billion weight loss industry.  Listen to Dawn.  Make the commitment, eat right, and do the work… for the rest of your life.  Forget about those magical fat burners.

Man Celebrates 65th Birthday By “Paying It Forward.”

31 Dec

Inspirational Story Of The Month

(Names And Details May Have Been Changed To Protect Privacy)

If you have seen the movie Pay It Forward, you have an idea what we are talking about.  If not, it doesn’t matter because the concept of “Paying it Forward” is much, much, much older than the movie that made it popular.

The concept can be dated back to 1841 when Ralph Waldo Emerson wrote, “In the order of nature, we cannot render benefits to those from whom we receive them, or only seldom. But the benefit we receive must be rendered again, line for line, deed for deed, cent for cent, to somebody.”

In 1916, Lily Hardy Hammond wrote, “You don’t pay love back; you pay it forward.”

In a nutshell, pay it forward is asking the beneficiary of a good deed to repay it to others instead of to the original benefactor.  In other words, passing on the good to the rest of the world, especially those who may not be in a position to pay YOU back or give ANYTHING to you in return.

That’s exactly what Doug Eaton decided to do for his 65th birthday.  As the story goes, he turned 65 on June 11, 2012.  He was looking for something to do, so he asked his friends on Facebook what he should do.  He got a whole bunch of suggestions.  Some were good.  Some were bad.  Many were ridiculous.  One was brilliant.

That suggestion was, “Why don’t you do 65 random acts of kindness?”  Eaton immediately knew that was the winner.

According to Yahoo: [Eaton spent] 65 minutes standing on the corner of NW 39th Street and May Avenue in Oklahoma City, handing out $5 bills to people who passed by. He told his Facebook friends that he handed out more than $375, but the response – and the amount of good cheer he shared – was priceless. From a distance, Eaton looked a bit like any other panhandler holding a sign at a street corner, but instead of a plea for money, his sign read: “I have a home… and a car… and a job. Do you need a few bucks for some coffee?”

As you can imagine, people who drove by were shocked.  Some just drove by shaking their heads.  Others told him, “God bless you.”  Many did not want to take his money.

Eaton posted on Facebook, “One obviously needy truck holding a family came around the second time after misunderstanding the first time to give ME $2 just to bless ME for what I was doing.  I took their money AND gave them a $5. We kind of traded blessings.”

A lot of people told him to give theirs to someone else.

But, Eaton did not invent this birthday act of kindness idea.  In 2010, Robyn Bomar turned 38 by doing 38 random acts of kindness.  Bomar wrote on her blog, “I planned out 38 things ahead of time, just in case, but really was praying for opportunities to present themselves throughout the day. My husband, three daughters, and my husband’s parents joined me in the most favorite birthday of my life!”

That day changed Bomar’s life and she started a website with an online community of people who celebrate their birthdays by paying it forward.  The website is http://www.thebdayproject.com.  Now you know what to do for your next birthday! 

The Real Life Batman You Should Know About!

16 Dec

One of the best things about being a kid is believing that superheroes really do roam the earth.  But as we grow older, we quickly learn they do not exist.  There are no altruistic do-gooders with super powers dashing around in tights and capes saving the world from the brink of disaster.

Well, what if I told you superheroes DO exist? I’m talking about REAL superheroes with REAL superpowers. I can prove it to you, and I guarantee you will never look at the world the same way again.  I also guarantee you will be a happier person from this day forward.

Here’s the story (and proof)…

In 2012, police in Silver Springs, Maryland pulled over a car because of an issue with its license plates.  The car was a black Lamborghini and the license plate was simply the bat symbol. Who do you think was driving?  You got that right… BATMAN… in full Batman outfit, including mask, utility belt, and cape.

A picture of the incident quickly ended up on social media sites and was so popular that the late night shows joked about it.

As it turns out in this case, Batman’s real name is not Bruce Wayne.  It’s Lenny B. Robinson, and he had the real license plates on the back of his “Batmobile.”  So, he was set free to do what this Batman does: Bring hope and happiness to sick children.

You see, Robinson, 48, is a self-made millionaire.  He recently sold a commercial cleaning business he built from the time he was a teenager.  He now spends about $25,000 a year on Batman toys that he brings to children fighting cancer.

Robinson brings them toys and memorabilia, backpacks, shirts, etc., and signs every book he gives them with a simple “Batman.”

Batman visits hospitals at least twice a month and gives talks at schools about bullying.  There is no doubt that he brings a lot of joy to a lot of suffering children.

But there are other “rich” people who do good things and give to charity.  Why is Robinson different from all the other “rich guys who write a check to charity?”

Robinson actually spends a lot of his personal time doing everything himself.  He is NOT just writing a check, and the time he gives is much more valuable than the value of the toys he hands out.

But the most important reason is Robinson’s intention.  Robinson has been doing this since 2001, and no one knew he was doing it until he got pulled over in 2012.  For 11 years, he did it without any expectation of recognition other than the reward of giving.

This is clearly different from other people who donate to charity and alert the press.  They do it for the great publicity it will attract to them and their business.

Joel Goldsmith, author of many books on spirituality wrote, “the only measuring stick of our [charity] is how much we give in secrecy without drawing the attention of others to our benevolence.”

With this definition, we can all be superheroes.  All you really have to do is start helping others for the right reasons.
