How Stealing Eggs Fed a Starving Family of Six

10 Feb

Ever had a bad day? One of those days where you wish you never got out of bed? We all have those days. Sometimes we get more of them than we want to deal with.

Clearly, life can be tough and it has brought many good people to their knees. It’s a safe bet that EVERYONE at one time or another has needed help. Getting help is what this amazing story is about…

Helen Johnson was just buying groceries, something we all do. But that’s where the similarity ends for most of us.

Helen was not buying much, just the necessities because the children in her charge had not eaten in two days. When the cashier told her the total, she was 50 cents short. This put Helen in a very tough spot. She is raising her two daughters, two grandchildren, and a niece. She gets assistance from disability and welfare, but her last check got lost in the mail.

Helen was faced with letting her family go hungry… or stealing. She chose the latter.

She put three eggs in her pocket and they broke. This mistake turned out to be a blessing in disguise.

Here is why: The cashier saw the broken eggs and knew she was trying to shoplift them, so she called the police. When the police came, Helen was honest and told Officer William Stacy what had happened.

Officer Stacy said she started crying and said she needed help to put food in her babies’ stomachs. Instead of arresting her, Officer Stacy told her to wait for him in the parking lot. She did and he came back with a carton of eggs he purchased for her. When he handed Helen the eggs, she almost broke down with overwhelming emotion.

What’s more, someone in the parking lot caught the entire exchange on video. The video was uploaded to the internet and as you can imagine, went viral.

But it gets even better… Officer Stacy is employed by the Tarrant Police Department in Alabama. The Tarrant Police Department signed up Helen’s family for a local toy drive and also collected enough donations to deliver two truckloads of groceries to the family.

Helen has been quoted as saying, “I was just getting eggs and now that’s saved my life. I’ve never been more grateful in my life. I’m so overwhelmed with the goodness of these people… My heart is wide open right now.”

This story is not as unique as one may think. In 2013, Jessica Robles was caught shoplifting groceries in a Publix Supermarket in Florida. When Miami-Dade Police Officer Viki Thomas looked at the situation, she decided to pay $100 for the woman’s groceries instead of arresting her.

Everyone knows there is plenty of bad in the world, but there is also plenty of good. Most of the time, you see what you are looking for.

“Nick the Stitch”

20 Jan

The Incredible Nine-Year-Old Boy Facing a Deadly Medical Condition and the Celebrity Who Gave Him Hope…

When he was just days old, Nick Santillo had his first open heart surgery. Nick’s parents stood by helplessly as little Nick went through heart surgeries two more times before his first birthday. By eight years old, Nick had been through eight surgeries.

Nick is now nine and has been in and out of the hospital his entire life.

Nick suffers from hypoplastic left heart syndrome, a complex and rare birth defect. In hypoplastic left heart syndrome, the left side of the heart is critically underdeveloped.

If a baby is born with hypoplastic left heart syndrome, the left side of the heart can’t effectively pump blood to the body, so the right side of the heart must pump blood to the lungs and the rest of the body.

Nick’s father is quick to say that by far, Nick is the strongest member of the family. He is always positive and just wants to know when he is going home. His parents are the ones who do the crying.

Until one amazing day…

Like most little boys, Nick has a celebrity idol — someone larger than life who he looks up to and would do anything to meet. When Nick was eight years old, he was given the surprise of his life.

Live on the Today Show, Nick got to meet his celebrity idol: WWE Wrestling Superstar John Cena. John flew into town just to meet Nick and invite him to be his guest of honor at and upcoming event. John even gave Nick a WWE nickname: Nick the Stitch.

But the story gets even better…

After that night, John didn’t forget about Nick the Stitch. John stayed in contact with Nick, demonstrating that his amazing act of caring is actually part of his real character, not just his wrestling persona.

In an incredible plot twist a year later, Nick went to see a WWE show with John Cena and John did not know Nick was coming. It was Nick’s turn to do the surprising!

John was in the ring and he looked into the crowd. He saw a “Nick the Stitch” sign and instantly knew who it was. John immediately ran into the crowd to see his friend.

John sprinted up the steps and gave Nick a big hug and asked him how he was doing. Of course, Nick said he was doing well.

But shortly after that night, Nick suffered a lung infection and a blockage to his gallbladder. Nick’s parents said he was in excruciating pain. He spent four agonizing days in the hospital, but never let go of his John Cena rally towel imprinted with the message, “Never Give Up.”

Nick never gave up and recovered once again. Since that time, Nick has gone to Disney World and gotten his orange belt in Karate.

It is clear that John Cena’s visit and friendship gave Nick more inner strength than words can describe. That inner strength may have already been the difference between life and death for Nick, something that will stick with Nick for the rest of his life.

It’s amazing how such a small gesture from the right person at the right time can dramatically change a person’s life. But, you never know if you are that person and if now is the time.

That’s why you should take every opportunity to make a difference in someone’s life. If you are that right person at the right time just once, it will be more than worth it.

The Pampanga Project

18 Dec

“We never know how far reaching something we may think, say, or do today will affect the lives of millions tomorrow.”  Those were the words B.J. Palmer (1882-1961), known as the “developer” of chiropractic and the son of its founder, D.D. Palmer.

But, who B.J. Palmer was is not nearly as important as the relevancy his words have for the incredible story you are about to discover.  This story brings that powerful statement to life and demonstrates exactly how powerful the seemingly insignificant things you do each and every day can change the lives of countless people in the future.  It’s amazing how much power and impact the actions of a single human being can have on thousands or even millions of people.

Here is the story…

The scene is almost surreal.  A young man is kneeling down cutting the hair of a woman in the middle of the sidewalk in Manhattan.  At first glance, this seems strange.  Upon closer examination, things are even more odd than expected.

You see, the man doing the hair cutting is Mark Bustos.  Mark is a 30-year-old hair stylist who works in New York City.  Mark is quite talented, and his hair cuts start at $150.  But who would pay $150 or more to get their hair cut in the middle of the sidewalk?

Probably no one.  On this day, Mark is cutting the hair of a homeless woman for free.  And this is not an unusual day.  Mark does this all the time, and his selfless actions have started an international movement.

Most pass right by the homeless without even looking at them or try to scurry by them as quickly as possible.  To the contrary, Mark seeks out homeless people and asks them if he can do something nice for them, if he can give them a great hair cut and make them feel awesome.

What’s incredible is that Mark’s acts of kindness started in a small town in his parent’s homeland of the Philippines.  In 2012, Mark and his girlfriend (a hair color specialist) rented a small barber shop in Magalang, Pampanga to start his project by giving away free haircuts to children who could not afford them.

This was the birth of the Pampanga project, and since that time, Mark has given free haircuts in New York City, Los Angeles, California, Jamaica, and Cost Rica.

Here’s what Mark said when interviewed in The Philippine Star, “The experience is always different, yet very similar. No matter what part of the world you are in, everybody loves the feeling of having a haircut. It is a universally known luxury that every demographic and walk of life can appreciate.”

The real story here is not the haircut itself.  The real story here is that Mark cares.  In a sea of people rushing by the homeless and not so much as giving them a glance, Mark stops and shows them some humanity.  He shows them compassion.  He gives them hope and love no haircut alone could ever give.  Mark happens to be a very skilled hair stylist, but the magic is in the act itself and the kind words he shares.

The real lesson is that you do not need Mark’s hair cutting skills to make a difference in the world.  In fact, you do not need any special skills at all.  The only thing you need is empathy and the willingness to show people you care.

We love helping our patients and their friends and relatives through their tough times and getting them feeling better! We are here to help you stay feeling better and looking younger!

Don’t be a stranger. You really can afford Chiropractic care! Don’t wait until you can no longer move!

Who Would Kick a Paralyzed Man Out of His Wheelchair and Steal His Surf Boards? The Amazing Part is What Happened Next…

4 Nov

We like to think we live in a world filled with good, caring people. Yet, each day the cable news channels are filled with the worst of what society has to offer. Does this mean most people are mean, nasty murderers and criminals? No, it does not. It simply means that’s what gets ratings and makes the television networks money.
That’s why watching the news can make even the happiest person feel depressed in no time. But every now and then, the networks give us a gift and show an amazing story – an uplifting tale that makes up for all the negativity.
This is one of those stories, but it doesn’t start out that way…
In fact, it starts by showing the worst side of humanity.
In 2007, a man named Randy Abbott went in for a simple surgery, a micro lumbar discectomy, and his life changed forever.
During the procedure, there were complications and the surgeon partially cut his spinal cord, paralyzing Randy from the waist down. The damage also caused arachnodidise, dystonia, reflex sympathetic dystrophy syndrome (RSD), and a constant headache that will never go away.
Randy spent two and a half years in the hospital and underwent several additional surgeries. Over and over, his doctors told him all the things he would never be able to do. Randy told them this was not the life he had worked so hard for and this was not the life he wanted. He had big plans and dreams and living the rest of his life in a wheelchair was not one of them.
He thought about calling it quits. But, then he said he heard a voice in his head say, “If you want to throw in the towel, I understand. It’s OK. I understand that you think your life is over and nothing good can come out of it. But before you throw it away, think about something. At this moment, you are drowning in fear and uncertainty. If you get back to living in the moment, have faith, and stop looking at everything as being problems without answers, you are going to have a great life.”
Right then and there, Randy decided to lead a great life. The first thing he did was forgive the surgeon who injured his spinal cord, then he told his doctors that he was taking charge of his medical care. They were giving him limitations based on statistics. Well, he was not a statistic and was not going to be treated like one.
By 2012, Randy was doing a lot of things his doctors told him he could not. One of those things was surfing, which was made possible when his friends designed and made him a special wheelchair and surfboards. He surfs three to four days a week and also teaches disabled kids how to surf. Randy grew up surfing and being able to surf again was amazing.
Then the worst of humanity reared its ugly head…
In July this year, Randy returned to his vehicle and found two men cutting his surf boards off the roof of his car to steal them. Randy, in his wheelchair, yelled, “Hey, I’m paralyzed. Don’t steal my surfboards!” The two men attacked him, knocked him to the ground, and ran off with his three surf boards.
Professional surfer Rob Machado tweeted about it, and the story went viral. Randy said he got over 500 text messages of support from people all over the world whom he did not even know. They told him not to worry about his surf boards because they are going to get him new ones. Quickly, two out of the three stolen boards were recovered. But they were heavily damaged. Local surfer Christopher Tomlin heard what happened and gave Randy three of his own boards while two new ones were being made.
The real news story wasn’t that two thugs robbed a guy in a wheelchair. No, the real story here is Randy’s drive to never let his disability place limits on his dreams and the outpouring of support he received from complete strangers who were moved by his story. Maybe sometimes watching the news isn’t such a bad thing. 

Will He Be the First Player in the NFL Without Arms?

24 Sep

Have you ever gotten a letter of praise from the President of the United States of America? If you are like most people, the answer is, “no.” But Isaac Lufkin has, and that should tell you he is doing something extraordinary…
Why is Lufkin so special that President Barack Obama would write him? Well, it’s not that Lufkin is special, it’s that he is AMAZING!
Here is why: Lufkin was born 14 years ago without arms. He never wanted any pity, and he never complained. Instead, he took all that mental energy and used it to propel himself forward in a positive direction towards lofty goals.
Lufkin has always wanted to do everything himself with ZERO help from others. Just imagine getting dressed — putting on your pants, shirt, socks, and shoes — without arms! Lufkin does that with ease. Now, imagine playing high school football with the goal of playing in the NFL!
Lufkin is currently 14 years old and is the kicker for his high school team in Providence, Rhode Island. His specialty is the onside kick and he and his team have had great success implementing it.
But, Lufkin wants more. He wants to be a defensive lineman. He loves big hits, and he actually thinks he has an advantage over his opponents with arms.
When questioned how this is possible, Lufkin quickly explains how they cannot grab him and they cannot grab his jersey. What most people see as a handicap, he sees as his advantage.
That really is the secret to success and happiness for anyone in life. We are all born with our own personal individual talents and gifts and those talents and gifts are very unique. The key is to discover what your unique talents and gifts are and recognize them as advantages, not disadvantages. Then, develop them to the best of your ability.
Just as important, accept that because of them, you are different from others. Being different is good. Being unique means you are special and you have something of value that sets you apart. The last thing you want to be is exactly like everyone else.
Lufkin has embraced who he is and how and why he is unique, and he is working hard to develop that extraordinary talent and ability all the way to the NFL.
But the important thing is not whether he makes it to the NFL or not. The important thing is, at 14 years old, he understands how to succeed and how to be happy. He will have a happy and successful life no matter what happens with his football career.
So, what did President Obama write to Lufkin? He wrote, “Your success on and off the football field serves as a reminder of what can be achieved when we work hard and stay focused on reaching our goals. You have set a powerful example not only for your teammates, but for all Americans, and I hope you continue to aim high and strive for excellence in everything you do.”
There is no doubt, Isaac Lufkin will be excellent at whatever he chooses to do.

Man With Only $1 In His Pocket Does The UNTHINKABLE!

4 Aug

Do you watch the news? If you do, it’s very easy have a pretty bleak picture of society because most of the stories you see and hear focus on the negative side of humanity.
Why? Well, one explanation is that news shows are only interested in one thing: ratings. Evidently, reporting about the ugly side of life in a tabloid-ish, sensationalized way gets a lot more ratings than stories about good people doing good things.
But, what if people are not as bad as is reported on the majority of the new programs? What if most people live peacefully together and actually go out of their way to help on another? What if most people are actually trustworthy and if given the opportunity, would do the right thing?
Here is a perfect example that you may not have heard about on the news…
Joe Cornell is 52 years old and in rehabilitation for drug addiction. One day at work, while watering trees across the street from the rehabilitation center, Joe heard a car honk. He looked up and saw that a car had pulled up next to an armored truck and was honking to get the truck driver’s attention.
Joe thought the driver of the car was trying to tell the driver of the truck that he had dropped something. So after they both pulled away, Joe walked down the street to see what was going in.
Joe immediately saw a large orange bag that he said was similar to the type Santa Claus would carry if it were red. That orange bag was filled with money. A lot of money. $125,000 to be exact!
$125,000 is a lot of money to just about anyone but it was probably even more to Joe who only had $1 in his pocket for lunch that day. This discovery could have gone a long way to helping Joe recover all the things addiction had taken from him.
While some people would have fantasized about how they were going to spend the money, Joe focused on doing the right thing. He said there was a brief moment when the devil was on his shoulder telling him to keep it but there was also an angel on his other shoulder asking him what his grandchildren would think decades later and what a poor example he would be if he kept money that was not his. Joe said no matter how he tried to rationalize it, keeping that money would be stealing.
So, Joe decided to turn the money in. All of it. It was not an easy decision for a man with only $1 in his pocket. But the real question is: WHAT WOULD YOU HAVE DONE?
Seriously, if you found $125,000 and no one knew, would you turn it in like Joe did or would you keep it?
Before you answer, Joe is not alone. Not too long ago three college kids bought a couch at a thrift store for $20. When they got home, they found a plastic bag with $40,000 in it. They also found a deposit slip with the name of the 91-year-old woman who had previously owned the couch. The college kids found the elderly woman and returned the money.
You see, maybe there are a lot of good people out there doing wonderful things EVERY DAY you just don’t here about on the news. 
